There is an extensive list of possibilities for why your cockatiel keeps her eye closed most of the time. Some possibilities include bacterial or viral infections, trauma to the eye, inflammation from a foreign object stuck in the eye, tumors or cysts on the insides of the eyelids, pressure inside or behind the eye from an underlying disease process, etc. However, when a bird keeps one or both eyes closed it is usually an indication of pain (in the case of trauma) or poor health. Whether the problem is curable or not can only be determined once an evaluation and diagnosis of the problem has been made. I strongly suggest you take your bird to an exotic species veterinarian for a physical exam. Your vet will be able to use special tests and diagnostic equipment to determine the cause of the eye problem and offer you treatment options.

Hello there! A little bit of honey isn't harmful for budgies, however I don't recommend using it as an everyday trick for getting him to eat his regular food. Honey is high in sugars (fructose and glucose), which is not good for birds in large amounts. If your budgie isn't interested in his regular food, there are many different brands that make all sorts of shapes, colors, and flavors to entice Zachary to eat (I recommend higher-quality brands like Zupreem, Harrison's, and Lafeber's). I would, of course, involved an avian vet if he doesn't seem hungry at all, as this could indicate an underlying medical issue. Making sure Zachary has access to fresh fruits and veggies is also a good idea. Good luck, and I hope that Zachary decides that pellets are yummy!

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. I'm sorry that Mango is having this issue. Yes, many different metals can cause toxicity in birds if ingested but the main ones of concern are lead and zinc. You will need to take Mango to an avian vet when they are open. The metal snap will need to be removed even if it is made of a non harmless metal like stainless steel. I suggest you go to a speciality center as they are more likely to have an endoscope which will be better than doing an open surgery for removal. Sometimes, depending on where the metal piece is located in the GI tract and the size of the snap, they can try removal via bulking agents fed orally instead of doing any invasive procedures. we may be adopting a two-year-old labrador from the shelter. He has a birth defect having been born with one eye we believe it may be called Microphthalmia. Oh my goodness, he is the cutest boy! I can see why you say he's the best boy. It could be that he does have microphthalmia, that one eye is much smaller than the other. The condition itself isn't painful, but it can lead to things such as glaucoma, which is painful. Cataracts can also be another complication of this genetic condition. I would recommend having him seen by a vet yearly to make sure there aren't any complications developing such as cataracts or glaucoma, but that shouldn't stop you from adopting him. Hi there! Excessive tearing of the eyes can be due to a number of things, including spring allergies (dust, grasses, pollens), eye irritants, or eye injuries/infections (these usually come with green, yellow, or cloudy discharge, rather than clear mucus). If you suspect allergies or irritation, you can try an over the counter medication such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to see if it helps reduce symptoms. However, if the eye discharge continues, worsens, becomes bothersome to Bella, or becomes cloudy or discolored, it's best to have your vet take a look in person. I would also stop the eye washes for a while and just gently clean any debris or mucus away with a warm, clean washcloth to see if that helps reduce irritation and tear production as the washes may just be exacerbating the issue.

Just found this small pimple on my 2yo cockers spaniel upper lip. Honestly could be there for quite some time as it's barely noticeable when not knowing what you're lookin for. Anything to worry about, or just wipe the area with chlorhexidine wipes and keep an eye out on it ? Some kind of dog acne ? Isn't hurting him when I touch or squeeze it.

I see what you mean about the bump, it could be canine acne, but it could also be a sebaceous cyst, a benign growth like a papilloma, or an infected area. Unfortunately without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. I do not recommend squeezing it again, don't use any wipes on it, and just keep an eye on it. If it gets bigger, it starts to bother him (you see him rubbing his face on things or using his paw to rub his face), and/or any other concerning behavior such as a lethargy or a loss of appetite, he will need to see a vet. It would be a good idea to get it checked out to be safe, but it's not an emergency. I hope this helps!

Hello, my 22 lbs Boston Terrier recently defecated an odd black color. He eats a mixture of fresh and baked dog food and no supplements other than Ocu-Glow for his cataracts. He is 10 years old. He occasionally eats food off the floor but I have not noticed anything recent and he has NO change in behavior. Here is an attached picture. If you could please share your expert opinion on what the cause may be and if he needs immediate treatment, I would appreciate that.

Darker stools like this can be due to a number of things. If Milo recently ate something off the floor or had some minor digestive upset, it may cause a darkened stool. Eating a lot of leafy greens like spinach can also darken the stool. In some cases, dark or tarry stools can indicate issues such as GI bleeds in the stomach or intestines, or more severe intestinal irritation. If this has happened only once, I would continue to monitor Milo at home for any other signs of a problem such as a painful tummy, vomiting, not wanting to eat, etc. If you see those symptoms, the dark stools continue or worsen, or you notice anything else ongoing, then it's time to see your vet.
