A parrot cage should be a minimum of 36 H x 24 D x 48 W inches with strong metal bars spaced no greater than a ¾ inch apart. Invest in the largest habitat possible to allow these birds plenty of room to call home. A variety of perches ¾ to 1 inch in diameter should be supplied at varying heights in the habitat to aid in proper foot health.
Specialized pellet diets developed for hookbills should supply 60 to 70% of your Amazon's diet supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables and fortified seeds. Parrot food should be provided in feeders that are secured and strong enough to hold up to these active, powerful birds. Although they should not make up more than 10% of their total food intake, treats developed for large hookbills are a vital part of their diet and will aid in bonding, encouraging natural behavior such as foraging and chewing and helps provide variety to their diet.
You will need to spend significant time daily socializing with your Amazon outside of its habitat. However, parrot toys can help keep him entertained while he is alone. Toys should be of the proper size and materials that will not easily be destroyed or present a hazard to a large hookbill, and a variety should be provided. While some toys encourage foraging behavior and problem solving to entertain a bored Amazon, others are useful for engaging with your pet.
