Pig Feeders and Waterers
Pigs have quite a reputation for eating whatever is put in front of them—and they will—but pig feed and treats should be formulated to meet their nutritional needs. And just as important as what you feed is how you feed it. Pig feeders come in many shapes and sizes, and the traditional giant trough filled with table scraps may not be the best solution for you. Pig waterers are also essential: Like most animals, pigs need constant access to clean, fresh water.
While many domesticated pigs eat their meals out of troughs, pigs are actually natural foragers, spending several hours a day rooting both above ground and underground for nuts, berries, roots and grubs. Pig feeders that emulate foraging, such as bowls and hay sacks, can help keep them mentally stimulated.
Table scraps and feed aren’t the only things you can give your pig, either. Silage, or fermented hay, has benefits for pigs, including simply adding a bit of variety to their diet. You can fill pig feeders with alfalfa, hay and other whole grains to help provide a well-rounded diet. And no matter how you feed, don’t forget to add pig vitamins and supplements to support digestion and overall well-being.
All that eating is bound to make your pet thirsty, so you’ll also need pig waterers. Having the right size and number of pig waterers on hand is key, as adult pigs can require anywhere from three to five gallons per day or more if they are lactating or gestating. And don’t forget pig grooming, first aid and insect control supplies for overall wellness. Determine what you need, then visit your neighborhood Petco Pet Care Center or shop online today.
