Crested Gecko
The Crested Gecko is also known as the New Caledonian Gecko, or even an Eyelash Gecko due to its pronounced ridges that mimic eyelashes. This arboreal lizard was once though to be extinct, but it wasn't until the early 1990's that a breeding group was imported into the United States. These animals are easy to keep and breed easily in captivity. Selective breeding has introduced a wide variety of colors, patterns, and markings making this one of the most popular reptiles available today.
The crested gecko—also called the eyelash crested gecko—comes in a variety of colors and is a fun-to-watch addition to any terrarium. They are relatively low maintenance and are good for new lizard pet parents.
Primarily tree-dwelling, their specialized toe pads help them move with ease along vertical surfaces. Once considered very rare, they are now popular pets known for their docile temperaments and unique fringed crest. You’ll find crested geckos for sale from many neighborhood Petco Pet Care Centers—along with crested gecko supplies, accessories and products to keep them well-fed and comfortable.
When evaluating the costs before bringing home your new pet, consider both the requirements for set up and maintenance. Preparing a habitat includes buying a crested gecko tank or terrarium, décor and hides, lighting, heating, substrate and food. The crested geckos will vary in price, depending on age, gender and availability. Once you have the habitat set up and your new pet, the monthly upkeep cost will mainly be for food.
Your crested gecko will eat in the evening because they are nocturnal. These unique creatures tend to do well with commercial crested gecko food supplemented with crickets, roaches, waxworms and other prey insects. They will eat mashed fruit a few times per week, including bananas, mangoes, pears, passion fruit and stone fruits like peaches.
The average size for an adult crested gecko is about 8-inches in total length, including their tail. These active vertical climbers do best in a larger, tall terrarium. Well-cared for pets will reach the average crested gecko lifespan between 10- and 20-years, so their habitat should be dynamic and comfortable. Provide a mix of branches, vines and other plants in a variety of heights—for more tips, check out our Crested Gecko Care Sheet.
