Epogen Injectable Solution, 1 ml Vial
Epogen is the brand name of a prescription drug used to treat anemia in both people and pets with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure. Anemia is a low red blood cell count, which means that insufficient oxygen is getting to the tissues and organs. In animals, Epogen for cats and dogs is often given as an injection. Unlike over-the-counter pet meds, this Epo drug solution is only available with a prescription from your pet’s veterinarian.
For many pet parents, the Epo shot is an essential part of cat urinary tract and kidney care. Epogen is epoetin alfa, which imitates erythropoietin, a naturally produced substance by the kidneys and encourages the production of red blood cells. The difference is that epoetin alfa is created in a laboratory and then turned into an Epogen injection.
The Epogen shot should be given with a new sterile needle and syringe that are then properly disposed of each time. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions and dosage schedule, as multiple injections over several weeks may be needed. While the Epogen injection for cats and dogs is commonly prescribed, you should still monitor your pet for any side effects like fever, aching joints, facial swelling, diarrhea or vomiting.
If your cat dreads injection time, you may want to look into cat anxiety medications. Cat pain relief medications are also commonly prescribed for later stages of kidney disease. You can get Epogen and everything else you need online or at your neighborhood Petco Pet Care Center.
