These attractive snakes are desirable because they are readily tamed. Captive-bred rosy and sand boas are usually very docile.
Females are generally larger than males
Enjoy burrowing, so a thick layer of sand or other loose substrate is recommended
As their name suggests, these snakes enjoy burrowing in the sand, and have their nostrils and eyes nearer to the top of their head to remain clear while burrowed in substrate
While burrowed, their head remains above ground, ready to strike at passing prey
A well-balanced sand boa diet consists of appropriately sized frozen rodents, thawed/warmed to above room temperature. If feeding your snake live rodents, do not leave them unattended. Live rodents can injure the snake, sometimes fatally. Feed juveniles once a week, adults every one to two weeks. Feed in a separate tank so that your snake doesn't associate your hand or the habitat being opened with feeding. Fresh, clean, chlorine-free water should be available at all times in a bowl large enough for your snake to soak in.
