Tangs are commonly referred to as surgeon fish due to having a sharp spine that looks like a "scalpel" at the base of their caudal (tail) fin that is used for protection, use caution when handling. Adults tend to live alone in the wild, so they should not be kept with fish that look similar, like other tangs. However, they should be peaceful towards most other tank mates. Adult Orange Shoulder Tangs are found on the outer slopes of reefs in the eastern Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. Juveniles are a solid yellow, with some hints of blue on the fins. As they grow into adults the yellow will change to a light gray/tan on the front half and the back half will take on a darker gray/blue coloration. The tail will also turn into a lyretail as an adult. They will grow to be over a foot in size, so will need a great deal of swimming space. Full grown adults of this tang will need around 250 gallons; however, you can get away with smaller aquariums when they are juveniles.

  • Add to an aquarium with ample swimming room and rockwork for grazing/hiding

  • The Orange Shoulder Tang goes through a drastic color morph from juvenile to adulthood
